Tulum's Bohemian Beach Club in Dubai

Gitano started life in 2014 as a single-venue Tulum beach club on the Mexican Caribbean coast, and grew into one of the world's most-replicated bohemian-luxe formats — currently in Tulum, New York, St-Barths, Mykonos, and now Dubai at J1 Beach (the brand's 5th international location, opened late 2024). The Dubai version is faithful to the original DNA: beachfront sunbeds with neutral-and-coral textiles, an indoor-outdoor restaurant in dense tropical planting, a rooftop bar with the Burj Khalifa in the photograph, and an unapologetically agave-spirits-led drinks programme.

Architecturally Gitano runs the same template as the Tulum original: low-slung wood-and-thatch shading, candlelit dinner service, planting that disguises the beach-club volume into something more residential, and a rooftop deck that opens at sunset for cocktails-and-skyline. From the rooftop you see across to the Downtown Dubai skyline with the Burj Khalifa as the focal point — a different J1 Beach view from the more sea-facing venues at the cluster's centre.

The bar is the venue's calling card. Gitano carries 60+ agave spirits — a depth that puts it among the top mezcal/tequila bars in the GCC — including small-batch mezcals, rare tequila reposados and añejos, and house-distilled infusions. Where Gitano sits in the J1 Beach cluster: the most party-coded, the most rooftop-focussed, the most tequila-led, and the one with the strongest weekly programming through Friday Gypsy Disco — the venue's signature dinner-and-dance evening that has become a property in its own right. Couples and groups who want a sundown rooftop into a late dance-floor evening should anchor here. Quieter-day food visitors should book the indoor restaurant in evening service rather than the daybeds, where the energy is more consistent.

The Gitano kitchen runs modern Mexican with serious technique. Signatures include lobster tostadas (raw lobster, citrus, chipotle), short-rib birria tacos with the proper consommé dip, smoked octopus tacos, ceviche aguachile, churros con chocolate with jalapeño-chocolate dipping sauce and mezcal caramel. Plates are sized for sharing — a couple typically orders 4–6 plates plus a main, and groups build the table from the central section.
