Tulum's Bohemian Beach Club in Dubai
Gitano started life in 2014 as a single-venue Tulum beach club on the Mexican Caribbean coast, and grew into one of the world's most-replicated bohemian-luxe formats — currently in Tulum, New York, St-Barths, Mykonos, and now Dubai at J1 Beach (the brand's 5th international location, opened late 2024). The Dubai version is faithful to the original DNA: beachfront sunbeds with neutral-and-coral textiles, an indoor-outdoor restaurant in dense tropical planting, a rooftop bar with the Burj Khalifa in the photograph, and an unapologetically agave-spirits-led drinks programme.
Architecturally Gitano runs the same template as the Tulum original: low-slung wood-and-thatch shading, candlelit dinner service, planting that disguises the beach-club volume into something more residential, and a rooftop deck that opens at sunset for cocktails-and-skyline. From the rooftop you see across to the Downtown Dubai skyline with the Burj Khalifa as the focal point — a different J1 Beach view from the more sea-facing venues at the cluster's centre.
The bar is the venue's calling card. Gitano carries 60+ agave spirits — a depth that puts it among the top mezcal/tequila bars in the GCC — including small-batch mezcals, rare tequila reposados and añejos, and house-distilled infusions. The cocktail programme is built around the agave list: margarita variations (smoked, spicy, fruit-led), mezcal-spiked tropical drinks, plus a serious wine and champagne list for non-spirits drinkers. Where Gitano sits in the J1 Beach cluster: the most party-coded, the most rooftop-focussed, the most tequila-led, and the one with the strongest weekly programming through Friday Gypsy Disco — the venue's signature dinner-and-dance evening that has become a property in its own right. Couples and groups who want a sundown rooftop into a late dance-floor evening should anchor here. Quieter-day food visitors should book the indoor restaurant in evening service rather than the daybeds, where the energy is more consistent.

Amenities at Gitano Dubai
Gitano is beach-only on the ground floor (no pool — for J1 Beach venues with pools see Sirene, Gigi, Bâoli, La Baia). The rooftop bar opens from sunset and operates as a separate space. The atmosphere is grown-up and not children-targeted.

Modern Mexican +
60 Agave Spirits
The Gitano kitchen runs modern Mexican with serious technique. Signatures include lobster tostadas (raw lobster, citrus, chipotle), short-rib birria tacos with the proper consommé dip, smoked octopus tacos, ceviche aguachile, churros con chocolate with jalapeño-chocolate dipping sauce and mezcal caramel. Plates are sized for sharing — a couple typically orders 4–6 plates plus a main, and groups build the table from the central section.
The bar is the destination operation. 60+ agave spirits — a depth that places Gitano among the GCC's top mezcal-and-tequila bars — including small-batch mezcals from Oaxaca, rare tequila añejos, and house-infused agaves. The cocktail programme runs margarita variations (smoked, spicy, fruit-led), mezcal-spiked tropical drinks (Paloma, Mezcalita), plus a wine list anchored by Mexican producers and a Champagne section for non-spirit drinkers. Cocktails AED 75–95.
Menu Highlights
What to Know Before You Go
Dress Code
Bohemian-resort. Linen, kaftans, panama hats — on-brand. Cover-ups required leaving the beach. After 19:00 in the dining room, smart-casual; at the rooftop after sunset, polished. Friday Gypsy Disco encourages dress-up — the crowd is photo-ready.
Booking
Friday Gypsy Disco sells out 10+ days ahead — book early. Rooftop bar tables go 5+ days ahead for weekends. Daybeds 3+ days for weekends. Mid-week walk-ins usually accepted for daybeds.
Getting There
J1 Beach south end, La Mer, Jumeirah 1. Multi-storey paid parking on site (validated). 15 min from Downtown, 20 min from Marina. Uber drops at the J1 Beach main entrance — Gitano is at the southern end of the cluster, signposted from the promenade.
Children
Atmosphere is grown-up and not family-targeted. Children acceptable at lunch; not at the rooftop bar (smart-casual evening venue). Gigi Rigolatto at the same J1 Beach is the family-friendly pick. The Gypsy Disco is explicitly adults-only-feeling.
Budget Planning
Couple's afternoon: AED 700–1,200. Friday Gypsy Disco for 2: AED 1,200–2,000 with cocktails. Cabana for 4 with full Mexican feast and bottle service: AED 3,500–5,500. Rooftop bar evening: AED 200–400 per person.
When to Visit
Friday Gypsy Disco is the venue's flagship — book it. Sunset (17:30–19:30) at the rooftop bar is the strongest casual slot. Weekday lunch (13:00–15:30) is the best food-led visit. Saturday is busy across the day.
What Guests Say
"Gitano in Tulum was the best beach club I'd been to before this — and the Dubai version captured the original. Same bohemian textiles, same mezcal-led bar, same Tulum ease. The lobster tostadas held up. The rooftop with the Burj Khalifa in the frame was a properly Dubai bonus."
"Friday Gypsy Disco is a serious event — proper dinner service rolling into a dance floor that ran until 1am. The DJ booking was Tulum-coded house and the food kept up with the table all evening. The 60-agave bar is a destination in its own right; ask the team to walk you through the mezcals."
"Beautiful design, strong food, expensive cocktails. The rooftop bar gets the best of Gitano — the ground-floor restaurant runs a similar sound but the rooftop has the view. Worth visiting at sunset specifically; a daybed-only visit would underuse the venue."
