Which Dubai beach club is right for your day? Detailed scoring, pricing, and editor's verdict.
African Queen and Twiggy by La Cantine compete in the same Riviera-Mediterranean lane on the Jumeirah coast — but from different design philosophies. African Queen brings literal Côte d'Azur heritage (the original opened on the French Riviera in the late 1960s) to J1 Beach. Twiggy is the homegrown Park Hyatt design-led concept by the La Cantine team (the same group behind Tagomago, Kyma, and Mimi Kakushi).
Both venues sit roughly 5–6 km apart on the Jumeirah coast and target the same food-led couples-and-small-groups demographic. The decision is about heritage versus design, terracotta-Riviera versus design-led contemporary.

African Queen's late-1960s Côte d'Azur original gives it 50+ years of brand DNA — the terracotta colour code, the Riviera service style, the Niçoise food traditions all flow from the original venue. Twiggy is design-led and contemporary (no inherited heritage) but executes its concept beautifully. For Riviera authenticity, African Queen is the genuine import.
Twiggy is unapologetically adults-only with a design-led aesthetic that's tightly curated — closer to a destination restaurant with a beach attached than a beach club proper. The 16+ entry policy keeps the atmosphere consistent. African Queen is family-tolerant which gives it a different (broader) demographic.
Twiggy's kitchen has the slight edge — the La Cantine team standard runs Mediterranean food with serious technique. African Queen's pissaladière, octopus, and grilled fish are properly Riviera but not destination-restaurant level. For pure food quality, Twiggy wins narrowly. African Queen wins on Mediterranean-coastal heritage.
African Queen runs a more serious French wine programme — Provençal rosé in proper depth, Burgundy and Bordeaux on the list, French champagnes, and a sommelier-led service that reflects the venue's heritage. Twiggy's wine list is solid but less focused.
Both venues sit on the Jumeirah coast about 5 km apart — feasible for a venue-hop. Lunch at Twiggy (adults-only design-led Mediterranean) Friday, dinner at African Queen (Riviera terracotta + French wine) Saturday. Same overall budget bracket (AED 600–1,000 per person), different programming registers. Mid-week visit to either is the value play.
African Queen edges Twiggy 8.6 to 8.4 overall — the genuine Côte d'Azur heritage, the deeper French wine programme, and the J1 Beach cluster setting give it slight gains over Twiggy's design-led contemporary execution. Twiggy wins on food quality and adults-only consistency. For Riviera-heritage couples, African Queen. For design-led adults-only food-led, Twiggy. Both are correct picks; the difference is whether you prioritise heritage or curation.
